DISASTER LOOMS FOR RESERVOIR:
Nechako Reservoir residents oppose dredging

«The people along the reservoir should not have to shoulder the burden of Alcan’s Kemano project once again. A sense of security about our future, our quality of life, our source of water and our livelihoods has been seriously shaken by this proposal.»

Opposition is growing in northwestern B.C. to plans by Alcan Inc. to spend $38 million to dredge Tahtsa Narrows in the west end of the Nechako Reservoir to increase its capacity to store water to meet power needs. The project could have devastating consequences for the people, wildlife, birds and fish, who depend on the life-giving water in the series of lakes appropriated by Alcan in the early 1950s and turned into a hydroelectric reservoir to power a Kitimat aluminum industry. Subject: Preliminary Scoping of Ootsa Reservoir Impacts
I agreed at our conference call to outline the impacts of dredging of Tahtsa Narrows and the subsequent impacts of increased drawdown of the reservoir. I have only included those impacts that pertain to MELP — there are additional impacts to the forest industry who use the reservoir for transportation and storage, as well as residents and other users. This is a preliminary scoping of the issues only. The effects of this proposal are complex and far reaching for the area’s ecology, people affected and the agencies involved. I suspect the public meetings that Alcan has planned, agency review and public comment will raise additional issues. I have separated this into those impacts from dredging at the Narrows and those from increased drawdown. Читать далее

Ministers Rock, Mitchell and Boudria Announce Recipients of First-Round Funding for Broadband Business Plan Development

MAXVILLE, Ontario, January 24, 2003 — On behalf of Allan Rock, Minister of Industry, the Honourable Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario), and the Honourable Don Boudria, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, today announced $2.4 million of business plan development funding as the next step toward making high-speed Internet access available to more unserved communities. In all, 89 applicants representing approximately 1149 communities will develop business plans outlining how each community would use high-speed, or broadband, Internet service. Each applicant received up to $30 000 toward the cost of developing those plans.
«Through innovations like distance education, telemedicine and improved opportunities for business and community development, broadband access has the potential to enhance the quality of life for all Canadians — especially for rural, Aboriginal and northern residents,» said Minister Rock. «This phase of the Broadband Pilot Program is a significant step forward in our commitment to delivering broadband services to all Canadian communities by 2005.»

Returns Issues in the Consumer Electronics Industry

It is estimated that returns cost the Consumer Electronics industry more than $10 billion annually, and although returns are unavoidable, it is essential that a means to capture the «true» reason for product returns be developed and implemented. Information obtained from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) indicates that over 60% of all returns reflect a reason code of «defective.» Читать далее
